The Shore Within · by Maree Creative

Creative blocks and emotional wellbeing

Meet the blank page with a little less judgement

A creative block can feel like more than a shortage of ideas. You may want to make something while feeling tired, exposed or under pressure to get it right before you start.

The Shore Within approaches this moment with curiosity. Instead of demanding a finished piece, you can explore the first small gesture: a line, a deliberately imperfect mark or a detail that makes you want to continue.

Make room for process

A small boundary can make a beginning feel more manageable. A scrap of paper, a few colours or a short amount of time can offer permission to try without committing to a large project.

Creative exploration can also make room for the feelings around the block: disappointment, weariness, comparison or a wish to play again. They are experiences to notice, rather than signs that you have lost your creative identity.

A small creative practice

The first centimetre of a beginning

Choose a small piece of paper and an ordinary pen or pencil.

  1. Set a gentle boundary

Use a small sheet or draw a box on the page. Let the limited space make the task feel lighter.

  2. Make ten imperfect marks

Give yourself permission to make marks you do not need to call beautiful. Notice how it feels to leave them alone.

  3. Keep one detail

Circle a point that interests you. Ask: What could I continue from here? One extra line is enough.

A note from Lucia

A creative harbour has room for unfinished pages. You can recover curiosity without turning the return to creativity into another measure of your worth.

Your questions

A little more clarity

Is this only for professional artists?

No. You may recognise a block in drawing, writing, everyday imagination or the wish to express yourself in any way.

What if I dislike everything on the page?

You can notice that judgement without having to fix the image. The exercise invites a small experiment, rather than a result you must keep.

How does this differ from feeling stuck in life?

This page focuses on making and creative expression. The related page on feeling stuck explores a broader sense of being unable to take a next step.

A first conversation

One imperfect mark can be a place to begin again.

Write to Lucia about what you are looking for, and ask about language, format and availability.

These pages explore creative expression, personal reflection and everyday wellbeing. The approach does not provide diagnosis, psychotherapy or healthcare. The current Circle of Light group is guided in Italian.
