Supporting teenagers as a parent

When conversation needs a little more room

A teenager may struggle to explain what is happening inside. As a parent, you may want to help while finding that questions, advice and reassurance lead to the same difficult conversation.

Creative listening offers another starting point. A colour, image or shared activity can create room for expression, without requiring a young person to give a complete explanation or arrive at an immediate solution.

Build a bridge through a shared gesture

The focus is a respectful creative space in which parents and young people can notice what they want to express. Drawing side by side, choosing an image or naming a colour may feel more approachable than answering another direct question.

Lucia's experience includes artistic workshops for children and young people in schools and libraries. Her family-related approach brings that creative experience together with listening and attention to each person's pace. Any work with a family is discussed individually, with clear aims and boundaries.

A small creative practice

A small listening practice for a shared moment

Invite participation rather than insisting. A young person can choose to pass or suggest a different activity.

  1. Put solutions on hold

For a few minutes, listen without immediately offering advice, explanations or a remedy.

  2. Offer an image

Ask: If this moment were a colour, place or object, what might it be? You can answer the question yourself too.

  3. Look for a manageable step

Ask what small gesture could make today feel a little easier. Leave room for the answer to be unfinished.

A note from Lucia

A shared page can become a meeting place. It does not have to reveal everything; it can simply make a different kind of conversation possible.

Your questions

A little more clarity

Is this family therapy?

The approach described here is creative, educational and reflective. It does not provide diagnosis, psychotherapy or healthcare.

What if my teenager does not want to draw?

Choice matters. A conversation, a word, a selected image or a different shared activity may be more appropriate. Participation should not become another demand.

How can a parent enquire?

Contact Lucia to explain the context and discuss whether the approach is suitable. Language, participants, format and availability need to be agreed directly.

A first conversation

Sometimes the first bridge is a little space in which nobody has to have the right answer.

Write to Lucia about what you are looking for, and ask about language, format and availability.

These pages explore creative expression, personal reflection and everyday wellbeing. The approach does not provide diagnosis, psychotherapy or healthcare. The current Circle of Light group is guided in Italian.
